Privacy policy
Last updated October 17, 2026
The short version
- ClassCake has no accounts for students or teachers.
- We do not collect personal information from students, and we never ask for student names.
- Your class settings and progress are saved only in your own browser. We can't see them.
- We use Google Analytics to count visits. It sets cookies, but we never send it names or anything typed into the site, and it switches itself off if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal.
- We show no advertising and use no advertising trackers.
- We never sell or share data, because we don't collect any to sell.
Who we are
ClassCake (“we”, “us”) is the website at classcake.com, a free daily puzzle activity for K–8 classrooms. It is run independently by one person, David. Questions about this policy go to david@classcake.com.
How ClassCake is meant to be used
ClassCake is a teacher-led activity. A teacher opens the site and displays it to the class; students take part as a group by talking, pointing and taking turns at the board. Students do not need to, and should not, create anything, type personal information or use ClassCake on their own devices.
Information stored on your device
When you set up your class, the grade you choose, the optional class name you type (for example “Room 12”) and which puzzles your class has finished are saved in your browser's local storage on that computer. This is how the streak and the cake work. This information:
- stays on that device and is never sent to us or anyone else;
- can be erased at any time from the My class page (“Reset our progress”) or by clearing your browser's site data;
- should not include a student's name. Please use a room number or class nickname.
Local storage is not a cookie. The only cookies on ClassCake are the Google Analytics ones described below.
Visit counting (Google Analytics)
We use Google Analytics 4, a service of Google LLC, to see how many classrooms visit and which pages and puzzles get used, so we know what to improve. It sets first-party cookies (named _ga) holding a random ID, and collects the usual signals: pages viewed, time on page, rough location (city or region), browser, device type and the site that linked you here. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We never send it names, email addresses, class names, puzzle answers or anything typed into the site.
We have turned off Google signals and ad personalization, we do not link Analytics to any advertising product, and we do not use it to build profiles of anyone. We only see totals and trends, never a report on an individual visitor. Google keeps this data for the retention period we set, never more than 14 months.
Opting out. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, ClassCake does not load Google Analytics at all. You can also use Google's opt-out add-on, your browser's tracking protection or a content blocker. ClassCake works exactly the same either way. See Google's privacy policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Information our hosting provider receives
ClassCake is hosted by Vercel Inc. When a browser loads a page, the provider's servers automatically receive standard technical information: the IP address of the network (usually the school's), the browser type and the page requested. The provider uses this to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and keeps it for a limited time under its own privacy policy. We do not use it to identify anyone, build profiles, or track people across sites.
Puzzle files are loaded from our own site. Fonts are served from our own site too. Apart from Google Analytics, loading ClassCake doesn't send requests to other companies.
Children's privacy (COPPA) and student records (FERPA)
ClassCake is made for teachers to lead, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. It has no sign-ups, chat, uploads or other way for a child to send us anything. The analytics cookie ID described above is used only to measure and improve the site (what the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act calls “support for the internal operations” of a website), never for advertising, profiling or contacting anyone. Because we collect no student information, ClassCake does not create or hold education records under FERPA, and a class's progress never leaves the classroom computer. If you believe a child has sent us personal information (for example by email), contact us and we will delete it.
If you email us
If you contact us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. Mail to our address is forwarded by our domain registrar, Namecheap, to our regular inbox. We use it only to reply and to fix the problem you report, and we delete it when it's no longer needed. Please don't include student names.
Your choices and rights
We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising. The only personal information we ever hold is an email you send us. Wherever you live, you can ask us what we have, or ask us to correct or delete it, and we will answer within 30 days. Your class's saved progress is on your own device, so you can delete it yourself (see above).
Where information is processed
ClassCake is run from the United States. Our service providers (Vercel, Google and Namecheap) may process information in the United States and other countries.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how ClassCake handles information (for example, adding optional teacher accounts), we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect. We will never start collecting student information.
